How To Maintain Your Septic System

Design Element | Countryside Plumbing Sewer Septic

Do you know that it can cost anywhere between $3,000 to $7,000 to replace the septic tank? Yes, that’s right!

Fortunately, with routine septic system maintenance, you can save yourself from spending your hard earned money on expensive septic system repairs.

Keep reading to find out more about maintaining a healthy septic system.

Tips for Septic System Maintenance

Here are a few tips to help you maintain your septic system:

1. Pump the Tank Regularly

Pumping helps prevent the accumulation of solids in the system. To keep your septic tank clean and healthy, you should get it pumped every two to five years.

The servicing frequency varies for every household, depending on several factors, including the size of the tank, the type of waste put into the septic system, the number of people living in the home, and more.

2. Inspect the System for Leaks

It can be difficult to spot any leaks in the tank while it’s in use, as the tank is buried underground.

The best time to check for leaks is when the tank is being pumped, so ask your service professional to include a leak inspection in their process (in case it’s not included already).

Apart from this, you should regularly walk around the tank and keep an eye out for spots where the grass looks more lush and dense, as this is an indicator of a leak.

3. Use a Bacteria Additive

It is possible for common household substances, like detergent and soap, to penetrate your septic system. These substances kill off the naturally occurring bacteria that allow your system to function properly.

To avoid this problem, all septic owners should use live organic bacteria that break down the presence of unnatural substances and solids that harm your septic system.

4. Install an Effluent Filter

It’s a good idea to get an effluent filter installed. This helps increase the life of the leach field and prevent clogs that could lead to flooding or septic backups.

Keep in mind the filter needs to be cleaned or replaced every three to five years. We recommend getting it cleaned or replaced when the tank is pumped to reduce repeat visits and maintenance costs.

Final Word

Getting your septic tank pumped every two to five years is the key to maintaining a healthy septic system.

Make sure you get it done from a professional company that specializes in septic repairs and maintenance.

Jordan is a great guy who seems to genuinely care about delivering quality work. Not only did he fix the problem quickly and efficiently, but also pointed out that the ejector pump in my basement had installed the wrong kind and that there were some other parts used that are not up to code.

I reached out to Countryside this past June when the pipe from my house to the septic tank broke.  Jordan responded to my call quickly, gave me a very reasonable quote, and immediately fit me into his schedule- which I was extremely thankful for because my yard was getting pretty smelly.  Jordan is an expert in his field.
