How to Unclog a Toilet Without a Plunger

Design Element | Countryside Plumbing Sewer Septic

Has your toilet decided to cause a mini flood in your bathroom? Are you panicking because the plunger seems to have vanished into thin air? Don’t worry; there are several alternative ways to unclog your toilet without a plunger.

And if you require assistance with any of the methods mentioned below, our seasoned team at Countryside Sewer & Septic is at your service. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with us today for further information.

Hot Water

The most common way to unclog a toilet without a plunger is by using hot, but not boiling, water. Here’s how,

Heat an adequate amount of water, making sure it’s not boiling. Slowly pour the hot water into the toilet bowl, filling it halfway.

Allow the hot water to sit for some time. Repeat the process, if necessary, as the heat can help soften and break up any blockages causing the clog.

After waiting a few minutes, flush the toilet several times to check for improvement.

Dish Soap

If the hot water alone doesn’t do the trick, add dish soap to enhance the unclogging process.

Pour about ¼ cup of the soap into the bowl. Wait approximately five to ten minutes before adding hot water to the bowl.

Let the mixture sit for a while before flushing again. The dish soap’s lubricating properties will help dislodge and move the clog along the drain.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

Start by dropping a cup of baking soda into the toilet bowl. Add one cup of white vinegar and let the mixture sit for around 30 minutes.

Now, pour hot, not boiled, water into the bowl. Repeat the process several times to loosen up stubborn clogs effectively.

The chemical mixture between baking soda and vinegar will work wonders in dissolving and removing any clogs causing the blockage.

However, if the water level in the toilet bowl is too high, you may need to wait for it to subside or remove some of it before attempting this method.

Wire Hanger

If the previous methods haven’t worked, grab a wire hanger to clear the clog from inside the pipe.

Straighten out the hanger and bend one end into a small hook. Gently insert the hook into the pipe and twist it around to catch any blockages.

Carefully pull out whatever the hanger catches, being cautious not to apply too much force to avoid damaging the pipe.

Once the clog is cleared, flush the toilet several times to ensure everything flows smoothly again.

Toilet Brush

Utilize your toilet brush to create a suction effect and dislodge the clog. Fill the bowl with hot water. Use the toilet brush to rapidly push down and pull up, creating a suction force.

It will help free your toilet up. Be careful not to exert excessive pressure, which could lead to water splashes or pipe damage.

Contact a Plumber

If all else fails, it’s time to call a professional plumber. Clogs can be challenging; seeking professional assistance is the wisest choice if the previous solutions have yet to work.

A plumber will have the expertise and proper tools to clear the clog quickly and efficiently.

Jordan is a great guy who seems to genuinely care about delivering quality work. Not only did he fix the problem quickly and efficiently, but also pointed out that the ejector pump in my basement had installed the wrong kind and that there were some other parts used that are not up to code.

I reached out to Countryside this past June when the pipe from my house to the septic tank broke.  Jordan responded to my call quickly, gave me a very reasonable quote, and immediately fit me into his schedule- which I was extremely thankful for because my yard was getting pretty smelly.  Jordan is an expert in his field.
